Birdsongs of Meghalaya – birdsongsofindia

Meghalaya is a hilly state in north-east India bounded by Bangladesh in the south and south-west and Indian state of Assam in the north and the east. The state has 22,429 Square Km area ranging from less than 100 m to more than 1900 m in altitude. The state receives very high rainfall and has the wettest place in the country. Vegetation cover is very rich and extensive, with more than 76% forests. Meghalaya has four national parks and four wildlife sanctuaries, and many biodiversity rich areas as sacred groves and community managed forests.

The state is very rich in flora and fauna with high endemism. More than 600 species of birds have been reported from the state which include resident and winter migrants. Cachar Bulbul and longtailed Wren-Babbler are the endemic birds presently known from Meghalaya only.

The bird calls and songs were recorded during March 2022, and during previous shorter visits during 2002, 2007, 2009 and 2016. Different versions of Telinga Parabolic Microphone and digital audio recorders were used for sound recording. rec
